The harbor offers you a beautiful lakefront with a promenade park, and a public beach. Don’t worry if you forget something at home, the harbor offers snack shops, dining, bait and tack shops, and fish cleaning stations.
You will be sure to see white-tailed deer, mink, coyotes and other wildlife at the Chain O’Lakes State Park, which borders three lakes – Grass, Marie, and Nippersink. The large state park is located in the northwest corner of Lake County. The park offers four trail systems for biking, hiking and horseback riding. Fishing is a popular activity in the Chain O’Lakes, as largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie and others are splashing around.
The Illinois Beach State Park stretches for six and a half miles along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. The park offers swimming, boating, picnicking, biking, hiking and fishing. Appreciate nature by viewing over 650 different types of plants in the dunes. Start your outdoor adventure in the nature area by viewing educational displays and visiting the hands-on exhibit area.
Fishing is also plentiful at many lakes around the county through the Lake County Forest Preserves. Independence Grove is one option featuring a 115-acre lake and visitors can rent kayaks, paddle boats, fishing boats and canoes at the marina. The forest preserves offer miles of biking and hiking trails, educational nature programs, and 3 public golf courses.
